Milk thistle seeds contain silymarin, which is a mixture of the flavonoids silibinin, isosilibin, silidianin and silicristin. They also have an oil content of about 25-30%, which is determined on average by 60% linoleic acid and 30% oleic acid . The protein content is 20-25%.
The milk thistle seed has a relatively hard shell. Here it makes sense either to grind the seeds briefly in the grinder or to use milk thistle seed powder (see Silymed). Both the seeds and the powder must be of a quality designed for humans (pharmaceutical or health grade).
For preventive treatments to support the liver, the powder can be used either pure or as an addition to egg feed. Tea infusion is not recommended as the flavonoid complex is difficult to dissolve in water - a loss of 90% of the active ingredient can be expected.
In case of acute liver problems, treatment should be discussed with an experienced veterinarian, as the trigger can inevitably be of the most varied nature.
