The Alexandrine Parakeet is found in Ceylon, Eastern Afghanistan, Western Pakistan and between India and Indochina. They live at low altitudes in places such as forests, jungles and coastal areas. This genus has as its main characteristic a colored collar around the neck in male birds or a stripe in the chin area. The Alexandrine Parakeet has a large head, full body and long tail. The Alexandrine Parakeet can grow up to 58 cm. They are very active birds. In addition to flying which is very important for all Parakeets, they also like to chew. They should be provided with enough wood to chew, lots of toys and perches. Unlike most Parakeets, the Alexandrine Parakeet does not remain with its mate for the rest of its life. Each pair requires two nests and once a suitable nest is selected, the female lays 2-4 eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs. Young males attain their final plumage at the age of 2 years.  ...More
