Like flaxseed, camelina has an average oil content of about 40% and a protein content of 25%, with essential fatty acids predominating here as well.
The content of the so-called mucus, which is found in the epidermis, is also of interest. These substances are high molecular weight polysaccharides, i.e. compounds formed from many sugar molecules (monosaccharides).
When absorbed, mucoid substances lead to a significant increase in volume in the intestine. The increase in volume leads to a distension reflex with stimulation of bowel movement.
Mucus also forms a sliding layer and thus facilitates the intestinal passage of food. In addition, mucus has a barrier function for microbes, providing the mucous membranes of the digestive tract with a protective layer. Parts of this mucosa also form the nutritional basis of the natural bacterial flora in the gut, which can multiply and produce large amounts of beneficial metabolic products.
Camelina is also said to have the feeding instinct of females: on the one hand it stimulates and on the other hand it improves the condition - and gives the plumage a special shine.
It is rich in essential fatty acids and is eaten by canaries as well as all natives.
