They are birds that come from South American countries such as Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay. The Red-crested cardinal, although it has several characteristics of the Cardinal family, belongs to a separate family called Thraupidae. Its scientific name is Paroaria coronata but it is also more widely known by the common name Brazilian cardinal. This species is also found in countries such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. It is a small bird whose size does not exceed 18 centimeters, while its weight reaches 30 - 35 grams. The male's song is more complex and more impressive. It is very difficult to safely distinguish between the two sexes, except by DNA examination or endoscopically. Young birds are distinguished from adults by the brick-red color of the crest and face, which is replaced by the normal red color at the age of two years. Their diet consists of parrot seeds, mixed with canary food or wild bird food, insectivorous bird food or live insects, small amounts of vegetables, fruits and sprouted seeds. Red-crested cardinals love to bathe even when temperatures are quite low. Their life expectancy exceeds 15 years.  ...More
